In 1958, at a State Farm Insurance company in Cleveland, Ohio, Patricia Bays Haroski saw how hard her boss (who was also her father) worked to keep the office running smoothly for his employees. She felt thanks were in order so she worked to have October 16th, her father’s birthday, designated as National Bosses Day. In 1958, a woman named Patricia Bays Haroski had an idea. As an employee at Chicago-based State Farm Insurance, she thought that a day set aside to enhance and encourage positive employee/employer relationships could create a more positive workplace overall. Four years after proposing her idea to the Illinois government, governor Otto Kerner made the observance official. Although the day was never made a federal holiday, it is recognized across the country, as well as in South Africa, India and Australia.
